Taking small daily doses of eggs can help affected children overcome their allergy to eggs.

Eggs are one of the most common causes of food allergies. More than 2% of children have an egg allergy, the most common symptoms being eczema, hives, asthma, allergic rhinitis, anaphylactic shock, and digestive symptoms.

Many will outgrow it by age 4 or 5, and others will do so as teenagers, but 10-20% will never get over it.

In a small essay, published in the magazine New England Journal of Medicine, 55 children between the ages of 5 and 18 with egg allergy were recruited. 40 were given small amounts of powdered egg white, the part that commonly causes allergy, and the other 15 were given cornstarch as a control.

The quantities were increased every two weeks until reaching the equivalent of a third of an egg daily.

They periodically went to their doctor to try to eat eggs. The test was graded as failed if any symptoms appeared, such as shortness of breath.

After 2 years of treatment, 75% of the children who received a daily dose of powdered egg were symptom free, that is, they were able to eat a whole egg without reaction. Of these, 27% remained symptom free for another year after stopping treatment.

Oral immunotherapy (OIT) is based on a person with a food allergy taking increasingly small amounts of allergenic foods as a way to treat the allergy.

Although these results indicate that OIT can help resolve certain food allergies, this type of therapy is still in its early experimental phase and more research is needed.

Researchers warn of the need for conditions to be carefully monitored by a trained physician.
