To maintain weight, in addition to controlling the number of calories we consume, it is also important to spend less time driving.

A new study from the University of Illinois shows that, in addition to the number of calories we consume, the amount of time we spend driving each day, rather than exercising, may also be related to our body mass index (BMI).

Body mass index (BMI) is an index of a person's weight in relation to their height. It is used to determine whether a person is above or below their ideal weight, and is calculated by dividing weight (kg) by height (m) squared.

The results, published in the journal Preventive Medicine, they included the data of the BMI, the number of calories per day and the number of miles that were driven daily.

Using a mathematical model, the researchers were able to find that after six years, driving one mile less per day was associated with a decrease of 0.21 kilograms per square meter in BMI.

They also found that the decrease in caloric intake by 100 calories per day was related to a decrease of 0.16 kilograms per square meter in BMI.

Making small changes like taking the bus and walking could have the same result as eating 100 fewer calories per day, although the best ways to lower your body mass index would be to reduce your calorie intake and exercise.
