Nokia unveils information about a new system that could rival Bluetooth

Today, more than 500 million devices use Bluetooth technology invented by Ericsson in the 1990s, especially mobiles, printers and laptops, to transfer data.

According to an article published in BBC News, Nokia has revealed the existence of a new short-range wireless technology system that consumes less power than Bluetooth and can work alongside it.

According to Bob Iannucci, Director of the Nokia Research Center, this new radio frequency system called Wibree "consumes up to 10 times less energy than the Bluetooth system."

Wibree's chips, which work at a distance of 10m, are also smaller than those of Bluetooth, so they will work for devices that until now lacked built-in wireless technology, such as watches, sensors or health monitoring devices. Since its consumption is lower, Wibree technology could also be used in mobile phones to extend the battery life.

Nokia has been developing Wibree technology for the past five years and will now begin a standardization process, offering the wireless system to other companies.

Nokia expects the first commercial version of the standard to be available in the second quarter of 2007 and that devices with both technologies will hit the market in two years.
