Certain chemicals in plastics, cosmetics, and beauty products can advance menopause.

A new study from the University of Washington has found that women who had high levels of certain chemicals in their bodies experienced menopause 2 to 4 years earlier than women with lower levels of these chemicals.

Researchers analyzed the blood and urine levels of more than 1,400 women from 111 chemicals suspected of interfering with the natural production and distribution of hormones in the body. These chemicals seem like they could decrease ovarian function, which can not only adversely affect fertilityIf not, it can lead to early development of heart disease, osteoporosis and other health problems such as certain types of cancer, metabolic syndrome, and in girls it could lead to early puberty (early puberty).

Among the chemical substances analyzed, the phthalates, which are a type of chemical found in plastics, household items, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products such as lotions, perfumes, makeup, nail polish, liquid soap, and hair spray.

Although many of these chemical exposures are beyond our control, because they are in the soil, water and air, the authors propose the need to educate ourselves about our daily chemical exposures and to be aware that the plastics and other household products we use they can have effects on our health. A good way to reduce your exposure to these substances would be to avoid processed and packaged foods and beverages, or to avoid heating food in plastic containers with the microwave.
